Ever stop to consider, as we did this morning for no apparent reason, that the interesting symbol @ has the most atrociously unimaginative and booooring name ever: at? This is no offense to AT, the uber-talented, cool, and creative MCS Healthcare PR point person, Ashley Thomaz, who we like and work with daily, pictured above, and who for some unknown reason puts up with us even when we bombard her with emails and jokingly address her in them as @. (C’mon it’s a little funny 🤏).
That said, off the top, we can come up with at least 5 better names for the @ sign — probably more if we really started thinking about it. Feel free at this point to reference that classic, laugh-out-loud Berlitz ad from 2006 which seems to get funnier every time we watch it and ask us in your best German accent “what are you sinking about?” Haha. Love that ad. Never fails to hit the funny bone aka musikantenknochen in German. Highly recommend you click on the link and watch it if you haven’t before.
Meantime, here are 5 alternative names for the @ sign to consider.
- Cinnabon.
- If Cinnabon Inc. were smart, they would trademark this idea — “Cinnabon is where it’s @” — and feature the symbol and the tagline everywhere. Then every time you spelled out your email for someone you’d say, for example, johnsmith cinnabon ( ) gmail.com, and that would invariably make you crave one, provided, of course, you weren’t Ozempicized, Zepbounded, or Mounjaroed in which case fuhgeddaboudit. If you lived in Sweden where cinnamon rolls originated, then you might decide to use the Swedish word, “kanelbulle”, instead as in svensvennson kanelbulle gmail.com.
- Here’s another idea: Cinnabon Inc. could hire U2 frontman, “Cinna”Bono, for an ad campaign where he eats cinnabons and sings the “Sweetest Thing” in between mouthfuls. “Ain’t cinnabons the sweetest thing (chew, chew) …oh, oh, oh, the sweetest thing”. In case Cinnabon and CinnaBono decide to do this, we’re counting on you, AT from MCS, to negotiate a cut of the royalties for us.
- Whirlpool. That name would just totally suck you in, wouldn’t it?
- Escargot.
- This is the French word for snail, so we wouldn’t be at all surprised if it were slow to catch on.
- Curled up cat.
- As Dr. Seuss might have memorably rhymed, this is a cat in the at.
- Spiral. Let’s give it a “whorl”, shall we?
- At any rate, both Milky Way astronomers (the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy) and lovers of the Milky Way candy bar are guaranteed to love it.
- Borat. Just because his name ends in “at”. Very nice!
